Coordinating Research Editor

 

Role Overview

Coordinating Research Editors (1 for each of life and physical sciences) take overall responsibility for the peer-review process for Original Research and Review Article projects at Youth STEM Matters. You’ll ensure the overall quality of published projects, and work to ensure both quality and efficiency of our operations within the peer-review process. You’ll also play a key role in supporting the development of Research Editors, and forward-planning team capacity.

Approximate Time Commitment: 4-5 hours per week

In addition to what’s outlined in our What’s Involved section, in this role, you’ll…

  • Lead the logistics of life or physical sciences peer-review process, including matching Research Reviewers to papers and forward planning team capacity to ensure we make best use of the team and offer our authors the best experience

  • Take responsibility for overall quality of projects published in Youth STEM Matters, ensuring we publish scientifically valid and ethically sound projects

  • Provide regular reports to Executive Team on team progress & stats

  • Complete initial checks of STEM projects submitted to Youth STEM Matters, to ensure they meet our minimum requirements for peer-review

  • Provide support to Research Editors to progress their assigned projects

  • Provide feedback to Research Editors

  • Ensure projects are all progressing as expected via weekly checks on our article management system

  • Lead regular meetings of Research Editors

Previous Experience

For this role, we’re looking for someone who has previous experience in:

  • Background in either life sciences (biology, biochemistry, environmental science, medicine, etc.) or physical sciences (physics, maths, chemistry, engineering, technology, design, computer science, earth science, etc.), which will allow you to peer-review an article written by someone at your educational stage.

  • Previous experience in STEM research & innovation, such as doing STEM based projects, editing/reviewing, scientific writing, etc..

  • Leadership experience (in any context) is essential.
