Key Programme Information

This edition of Youth STEM Changemakers is a part-time hybrid programme which takes place from 22nd January-31st March 2024, and is free for young people to take part in thanks to generous support from Scottish Enterprise and Scottish Government.

    • Programme Starts: 22nd January. In the first week, you’ll join an onboarding call one weekday evening (multiple time options available).

    • Launch Weekend in Glasgow: 27th & 28th January 2024. Get to know your fellow participants, start your STEM changemaking journey, and develop ideas.

    • Workshops via Zoom: 2-3 hours from 10am-1pm, each Saturday starting 27th January (until 16th March). Develop your skills to build your solution through highly interactive workshops on topics like marketing, impact business strategy, changemaker wellbeing and pitching.

    • Guest Speakers via Zoom: 1 hour per week, in the evening (on variable days of the week). Learn from inspiring entrepreneurs, innovators and changemakers, who share their stories, learnings and experiences.

    • Online Showcase: weekday afternoon of week beginning 11th March. Become a role model for other young people across Scotland, empowering a new generation of STEM changemakers!

    • Showcase Event in Glasgow: late afternoon/evening of 19th/20th/21st March (date TBC). Celebrate your achievements and share your project with entrepreneurs, decision-makers, investors/start-up funders, with the potential to access further support to grow your project!

  • During the programme, you’ll develop a STEM-based project which takes an entrepreneurial approach towards solving a sustainability challenge linked to at least one of the Sustainable Development Goals. We’ve got a super broad definition of each of STEM, sustainability and entrepreneurship, and challenge the limiting stereotypes in each of these areas. This means you could work on building something like…

    • 🌱 A youth community garden that produces fresh organic food for local initiatives tackling food poverty

    • 🎮 A video game that increases awareness of ocean conservation issues

    • 💄 A cruelty free cosmetics brand that creates employment opportunities for marginalised communities

    • 🐮 A cattle feed that reduces the CO2 emissions of farming

    • 💻 A web design agency that uses sustainable web design principles

    • 🚲 An app that enables people to make more sustainable travel choices

    • 🧠 A non-profit that supports young people to navigate climate anxiety in a safe space and through action

    • 📽️ A documentary & screening tour that empowers youth to take action for the SDGs

  • We're committed to ensuring Youth STEM Changemakers is accessible to and inclusive of all young people. This includes:

    • In-Person Events: We always select wheelchair accessible venues, gender neutral bathrooms will be provided, and sensory packs and a quiet/prayer room will be available to all participants. The venue will have good public transport links, and meals will be provided to suit different dietary requirements

    • Travel Costs: We are able to reimburse reasonable travel costs of all participants to in-person sessions, and can also cover overnight accommodation for participants travelling large distances

    • Disability-Related Support: We take a person-centred approach to ensure each individual's needs are met, so please tell us how we can best support you in your application form! Examples could include (but are not limited to) 1-1 support, travel support, BSL interpreter, sharing information in certain formats, etc.

    • Digital Access: We are able to provide data packages/technology support for online sessions, where this would be a barrier to participation

    • Other Support to Participate: If you need another form of support to be able to participate, e.g. support for caring responsibilities, please let us know in our application form!

Who We’re Looking For

Youth STEM Changemakers is open to 16-24 year olds from across Scotland who share a determination for building a better future. Whether you’re a techie, a scientist, a creative or an innovator, you'll be passionate about solving a specific sustainability-related issue, and up for the challenge of creating something that matters.

You’ll have ambition, resilience, resourcefulness and a real passion for the problem you want to solve, and these attributes are much more important to us than your past experience. No matter whether you consider yourself to be entrepreneurial or not, if this sounds like you, we’d love to receive your application!

How to Apply

  • Once you’ve decided the Youth STEM Changemakers: Entrepreneurs for Impact programme is the right opportunity for you, and have thought about whether this is a commitment you’re able to make without compromising your wellbeing or education/work, it’s time to submit your application! Applications are submitted via a Google Form.

You will be asked to share some information about yourself and answer 4 main questions, which will be used to determine whether your application reaches the next stage of selection. We’ll also ask you about your availability for the programme and any support you may need to participate.

We recognise communication can take many forms, the 4 questions can be answered in a range of formats, including typing straight into this form to give a written response, or creating and sharing a link to a video, voice note, performance or poster. Please use whichever method(s) best allows you to communicate your answers! If you need to send us an attachment, you can either upload this to Google Drive (or a file sharing service) and add the link to your application form, or email your responses to helena@youthstem2030.org. All parts of your application must be sent to us before the advertised deadline.

The 4 questions you will be asked are…

💬 The Story of You: What would you like us to know about your identity? This is your opportunity to proactively share anything about yourself that has helped to shape your perspective. Tell us the story of you! Answers should be a maximum of 2500 characters/3 minutes.

🌎 A Problem You Care About: Which specific sustainability challenge are you most passionate about solving and why? Tell us about the specific issue, why you're passionate about it, and why you are the right person to solve this issue. Answers should be a maximum of 1500 characters/2 minutes.

⚡️ Your Motivations: What has motivated you to be part of this programme? Tell us about why you're applying for this programme, what you want to gain from it, and how you think it will help you in your journey creating impact as a STEM changemaker. Answers should be a maximum of 1500 characters/2 minutes.

🗣 Your Superpowers & Kryptonite: What are your top 3 superpowers (skills, character traits, values or attributes) which you hope to bring to the programme and use to make change as you develop of your project? Identify your 3 superpowers, and share a couple of sentences on how you show each of these. Answers should be a maximum of 800 characters/1 minute.
🚀 And, name 2 weaknesses/areas for development (your kryptonites!) you hope to build skills in through the programme.

NB: There are no minimum requirements for response lengths for these questions, but a well thought through application will likely score higher.

  • After the advertised closing date, you will receive a confirmation email from us, telling you that your application has been received. In this email, we will advise you on when you should hear back from us, based on the number of applications we need to review. We care about every application we receive, so this allows our team to ensure time can be given to fully reviewing each application.

All applications are anonymised before being given to our application reviewers, which minimises bias in our selection process and means you can be confident your application will be reviewed fairly.

After we have completed an initial review of all applications, we’ll email you to let you know whether you have been shortlisted and therefore selected to progress to the next stage of applications (Step 3).

  • Our interviews are informal in nature and take place by video call (usually Google Meet). Our interviews give you the chance to get to know more about you and your motivation for joining this programme. It also gives you the chance to meet several members of our team to ask any questions you have about Youth STEM Changemakers. We know interviews can be daunting (and this might even be your first interview!), but we’re not looking for who is the best at doing interviews - we just want to get to know you, your passions, and why you want to join the programme, so all you need to do is be yourself and do your best!

NB: Depending on the number of applications we receive, we may skip straight to Step 4 in the application process.

  • We know how much time you’ll have put into your application, so we’re committed to ensuring that all applicants are informed of the outcome of your application. Our team also works hard to ensure we provide feedback wherever possible to applicants who are interviewed.

Unfortunately, as we often receive many applications, we can’t accept every application we receive. However, if you’ve previously been unsuccessful, we highly encourage you to work on your application and reapply for future opportunities - several members of our other programmes were initially unsuccessful but worked on their applications and made successful reapplications!

Application Support

We’re committed to ensuring all applicants have access to the support they need to apply to participate in Youth STEM Changemakers. Rewatch our Information Session or Instagram Takeover.

Accessibility & Inclusion

Frequently Asked Questions

  • There’s no one thing that makes someone an ideal applicant - we’re looking for a range of young people, who each have different backgrounds, skillsets and interests. It doesn’t matter whether you’ve done something like this before - we’re most interested in your passion for solving a problem you care about to make the world a better place!

There’s a few things every participant has in common though…

Passion for solving a specific problem/issue - you care about a specific problem/issue (which links to at least one UN Sustainable Development Goal)

Builders and ‘doers’ - you don’t just see the problem you want to solve, you’re ready to take on the challenge of developing an impactful solution to tackle the world’s biggest sustainability challenges

Ambitious & enthusiastic to learn and grow - your ambition to build a better world and enthusiasm for growing as a STEM changemaker is much more important to us than your previous experience or qualifications

Age 16-24 and based in Scotland - unfortunately if you don’t meet this eligibility criteria, we can’t consider your application

Able to commit to the programme - you’re committed to your own personal development, available for the key programme dates, and are committed to spending time outwith these developing your project/solution!

Our main advice when working on your application is simply to be yourself!

  • All 16-24 year olds based anywhere in Scotland can apply to join the programme. The programme will be delivered in English and BSL (please let us know if you require a BSL interpreter in your application!).

  • No, and several of our past participants didn’t have any background in STEM before getting involved - we’re keen to welcome young people with all academic interests!

  • No - we expect that most participants will never have done something like this before!

  • Yes! This programme is for young people with a determination for building a better future. It doesn’t matter whether you consider yourself to be entrepreneurial yet - your ambition, resilience, resourcefulness and passion for the problem you want to solve are much more important to us!

  • Yes - each member of the team should submit a separate application. Please add a note in your application with the full names of your other team members, so we can review your applications as a team.

  • Your project will be a STEM-based entrepreneurial solution to a real-world problem. By the end of the 10 weeks, you’ll have some sort of prototype, whether that’s a working model, early sample or minimum viable product. Scroll down to discover some of the incredible projects other young people in our community are building!

  • This edition of Youth STEM Changemakers: Entrepreneurs for Impact is free for young people to take part in, thanks to the support of the Ecosystem Fund 2023-24. We’ll also cover your travel costs, meals for in-person events and other support you may need to participate fully.

  • Each week, you’ll spend time working on your project (building, planning or talking to users), participate in an interactive online workshop, and attend 1-2 talks from incredible STEM changemakers. When working on your project, you’ll have a lot of ownership over the direction it takes, including setting your own goals, and deciding your priorities.

  • The key programme dates (and delivery formats) are outlined above, but you can work on your project on days/times that suit your schedule. Your full commitment to the programme is expected and will ensure you (and your impactful project!) gain maximum benefit from it, but it is fine if you need to miss an occasional workshop.

  • Sadly, on this occasion, no. However, this is only the first edition of Youth STEM Changemakers and we are already planning for global editions in 2024 - sign up to our waiting list and be the first to know when applications open!
